Woodburned Plaque – Japanese Woman with Her Cat, Inspired by Early Ukiyo-e Art
I’ve always felt a special connection to early Japanese prints, especially the quieter ones that show simple moments in such a graceful way. This plaque is based on a monochrome ukiyo-e design from the late 17th or early 18th century. The original artist worked with gentle lines and an easy flow, and I tried to follow that same spirit here.
The woman in the artwork stands with a calm posture, looking back and down toward a small cat sitting at her feet. There’s something warm in the way her gaze softens toward the animal. It’s a tiny moment, but it tells a whole story. I enjoyed following the details of her kimono patterns and the light playfulness in the cat’s shape. Burning these lines into wood felt almost like tracing the quiet mood of the original print.
The plaque is finished with glossy water-based varnish, giving it a soft sheen and keeping it well-protected. It’s a one-of-a-kind piece, especially for someone who loves traditional Japanese art or simply enjoys peaceful scenes from another time.
