Hand-Burned Ball-Shaped Kokeshi Doll – Girl Holding a Cat
Cats have always had a special place in Japanese culture, and I find their presence in folk art both comforting and quietly expressive. This kokeshi grew from that affection. I wanted to create a figure that speaks about closeness, warmth, and the simple joy of holding someone dear.
Like the other dolls in this small series, this kokeshi was made in a rounded, ball-like form. The shape softens the figure and allows the scene to unfold gently around the surface. The girl holds a cat close to her chest, not as a symbol or ornament, but as a companion. Their bodies lean into each other, forming a single, calm moment.
The image was entirely wood burned by hand. I kept the lines simple and slightly playful, letting the cat’s relaxed posture and the girl’s quiet smile do the work. Her expression is intentionally restrained, leaving the feeling open rather than fixed. The surrounding pattern is light and unobtrusive, supporting the central scene without taking attention away from it.
This piece is not meant to be decorative in a loud way. It is a small, intimate object — one that rewards slow looking. It may resonate with collectors who appreciate one-of-a-kind interpretations of kokeshi that remain respectful of tradition while allowing space for personal storytelling.
