Chouko – Hand-Burned Wooden Kokeshi Doll in Butterfly Kimono
I created this kokeshi doll, Chouko, as a tribute to the delicate beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Her rounded form gives her a soft, inviting presence, while the intricate wood-burned details bring her kimono to life. I carefully burned every line by hand, shaping the flowing patterns of butterflies and flowers—symbols of transformation, grace, and fleeting beauty in Japanese art.
Kokeshi have always fascinated me, not just for their charm but for the quiet storytelling within each design. They hold a deep cultural significance, embodying simplicity, elegance, and the warmth of natural wood. In Chouko, I wanted to capture that essence while adding my own personal touch, inspired by traditional kokeshi styles and classic Japanese motifs.
Her name, Chouko (蝶子), means "butterfly child," a fitting name for a doll adorned with delicate winged patterns. Her smooth, ball-shaped body and gentle expression give her a serene, enduring appeal—perfect for collectors who appreciate handcrafted kokeshi with character and depth.
