Wood Burned Plaque – Japanese Courtesan after woodblock print by Kaigetsudō Anchi
This elegant wood-burned plaque features the figure of a beautiful Japanese courtesan adjusting her hairpin — a quiet, intimate moment captured with grace and clarity. The image is based on an original monochrome woodblock print (sumizuri-e) by Kaigetsudō Anchi (壊月堂 安知), an artist active in the early 18th century (circa 1700–1716) and associated with the Kaigetsudō school of ukiyo-e.
I carefully transferred the design onto smooth plywood and burned the image using traditional pyrography tools. The floral kimono, flowing lines, and tranquil expression were all done with attention to detail and respect for the original artwork. The final piece was coated with glossy, water-based varnish to highlight the lines and protect the surface.
This plaque makes a refined and thoughtful gift for anyone who appreciates antique Japanese art, history, or understated beauty in home decor.
Plaque size: approx. 29.7 x 17.8 cm (11.7 x 7 in)
