Norse Monster Sterling Silver Pendant with Red Brecciated Jasper
This pendant started with a large, rectangular piece of red brecciated jasper. The stone is dark red, almost black in places, with a bright streak running across it under the polished surface. It has weight in color as well as it has in the hand, and that dense, blood-dark red gives the whole piece its initial force.
Above it, I placed a silver scene modeled after an ancient Norse carving. I carved it in wax first and then cast it in sterling silver using the lost-wax technique. The image is old and harsh: a monster devouring a man. It is full of movement, but the feeling is not decorative. The lines are rough and strong, and even after polishing, the silver still keeps something of that primeval character.
I think this is one of the more masculine pieces in my 'Culture Shock' collection. While all of the pendants in the collection are unisex, this one has a harder presence, and I see it especially well on a man. Still, I would wear it myself without hesitation.
On the back, I cut spirals and angular openings into the setting, so the reverse side would feel finished, with its own quiet beauty. The monster casting is hollowed on the back as well, which reduces the weight and makes the pendant easier to wear.
Please note: the stone has a small chip on the polished surface, visible on the front as a darker spot. It is minor, but it is there, so I am offering this pendant at a large discount.
