Celtic Bird Ocean Jasper Sterling Silver Statement Pendant
This pendant has the presence of a small silver sculpture mounted on a stone. The ocean jasper is large, smooth, and rounded, and its shape reminds me of a bird’s egg, especially when you look at the natural pattern scattered across the polished surface.
The stone is dark and earthy, filled with circles of different sizes—soft grey, cream, pale brown, and muted green. Some appear as small points, while others form clear rings inside rings. Together they give the jasper a quiet, ancient look, as though the pattern had been slowly gathered and sealed inside the stone.
Above it, I placed a large Celtic bird. I made the figure by the lost-wax casting technique after an ancient image, then polished the sterling silver to bring out the curved body, long beak, folded lines, and raised ornament. I wanted the bird to feel substantial and balanced on the stone, with enough weight of its own to match the jasper below.
Birds often appear in Celtic art with their bodies shaped into ornament without losing their character, and they carry natural associations with freedom, distance, and the open sky. Here the bird and the egg-like stone seem to belong together from the beginning.
The bird casting is hollowed on the back, which reduces the weight and makes the pendant more comfortable. The reverse of the stone setting is pierced with round openings that echo the jasper’s dotted pattern and give the back its own quiet order.
