Norse Deer Lace Agate Sterling Silver Statement Pendant
This is one of the more substantial pendants in my Culture Shock collection and one of three Nordic ones.
I chose this lace agate for it because its broad bands of cream, beige, and soft brown reminded me immediately of Scandinavian knitting. The narrow dark line through the middle looks almost like one row in a patterned sweater, while the lighter bands above and below repeat with the quiet rhythm of wool worked by hand. The stone is smooth and polished, but its pattern still feels warm and familiar.
For the silver part, I chose a deer from an ancient Norse image. I made it by the lost-wax casting technique, keeping the figure broad and low to balance the shape of the stone below it. The long body, lowered head, and curling ornament give the deer a calm, watchful presence.
Stags appear in Old Norse myth beside Yggdrasil and at Valhalla. I liked that old connection with the northern world, while keeping the silver figure close to the character of the original image. Here the deer and the lace agate share the same sense of rhythm: one shaped in silver, the other already present in the natural layers of the stone.
The deer casting is hollowed on the back, which reduces the weight and makes it more comfortable. The back of the stone setting is opened almost completely, so the layered pattern of the agate can also be seen from the reverse.
